Title: Assistant Tax Manager

Primary Purpose of Job:
Responsible for assisting the Transaction Tax and Excise Tax managers with managing the compliance functions. Coordinates and represents the company on all non-income related tax audits. Must be familiar with regulations at the federal, state and local level. Ensures organizational compliance with all related federal, state and local tax laws and regulations while minimizing tax liability through sound and informed application of laws and regulations.
Major functions for this position
Manages the preparation, timely filing, payment, and review of all excise and transaction-based tax returns and related reporting to ensure organization compliance with all related federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations. Validate all data used to prepare excise and transaction based tax returns.

Supervises and coordinates all tax audits and controversies (excluding income tax). Keep upper management properly updated on issues.
- Monitor statute of limitations on all open audits and keep up with extension requests.
- Manage the record retention policy and practices for all tax groups (excluding income tax.)
- Ensure audit findings result in sustainable process and procedure changes in the appropriate tax areas of the company. Perform internal reviews of those processes as needed.
- Review and maintain all audit procedures and training documentation.
- Reduce audit findings through internal review and research, and engage and work with external parties to review for potential tax overpayment.

Act as a team member of the Tax Department through cross-training, backup, and support of the Tax Managers

Minimize transaction and excise tax liabilities through sound and informed application of tax laws and regulations.
- Monitor changes in tax laws and their impact on the organization.
- Research applicable federal, state, and local tax law changes.
- Oversee taxability set ups of retail items.
- Oversee efforts to pay proper amounts of transaction and motor fuel taxes on purchases.
- Respond to inquiries from government agencies regarding tax filings, compliance, claims and related matters as needed.

Assist with monitoring and maintaining all transaction & excise tax systems related to reporting.
- Ensure that appropriate persons are informed of tax rate changes.
- Ensure that accruals/rate changes are timely and accurate for sales & motor fuel tax.
- Maintain and update all reporting relating to transaction & motor fuel taxes.
- Coordinate Tax Accounting matters with appropriate departments.
- 10% of total job
Assist Tax and Licensing Manager with any special projects as needed.

Position Specifications

Required education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
Desired education:Master’s Degree in Taxation, Accounting, or Business Administration and/or CPA.
Required experience: Five years of accounting experience and/or a minimum of four years preparation/review of sales and use, and/or motor fuel tax. One year of research experience which can include tax, GAAP, or legal research.
Desired experience: Ten years accounting experience and five years tax experience. Experience with retail licenesing, sales & use tax, and property tax. Accrual accounting experience.
Required Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Excel, good time management and organizational skills, detail oriented, good oral and written communication skills, independent decision-making skills, and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Strong analytical skills and the ability to self-motivate.
Desired Skills: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Access, and JD Edwards.
Additional criteria
This position requires good time management and organizational skills. Must be able to work under pressure of deadlines. This is an extremely technical position requiring specific skills and training. Needs good phone skills for dealing with personnel in various taxing jurisdictions. This position must be able to quickly respond to research needs in regards to all aspects to Store Development Accounting when needed. Must have the ability to multi-task. This position must have good inter-personal relationships with operations, executive departments, as well as finance/accounting personnel.
Starting Salary Range: $95,800-$119,800
