Primary Purpose of Job: The System Administrator II is responsible for server and storage infrastructure including assessing, project planning, implementing, documenting and supporting complex systems infrastructure environments with a significant VMware implementation. A Systems Administrator II will be involved in multiple projects through all life-cycle phases in accordance with established procedures and standards.  Diagnoses, isolates and de-bugs system problems, performs problem resolution and provides Tier 2 technical support for all enterprise systems including Active Directory, Exchange, ERP, SharePoint and the Storage environment.

Systems Administration

  1. Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
  2. Contribute to and maintain standards.
  3. Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs.
  4. Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
  5. Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
  6. Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.

Systems Engineering

  1. Provide technical expertise and assist application developers in implementation, problem determination as well as system and application tuning.
  2. Perform configuration of servers in accordance with Systems Engineering standards and program documentation requirements.
  3. Provide hardware/software expertise for business applications on servers and in the storage environment. 
  4. Works closely with System Architect to ensure knowledge of enterprise standards and strategies ensuring solutions are aligned with these standards and strategies
  5. Implement, administer, secure, document and monitor Enterprise Servers, including hardware operating system, VMware, and Storage Devices.
  6. Responsible installing, supporting, securing and maintaining purchased software packages.
  7. Analyze current utilization and future growth and upgrade needs based on capacity planning information.

Problem Management

  1. Provide 3rd level support, analysis, permanent documented resolutions for server and systems issues, and communicate the status of problems and resolutions to Systems Support, Help Desk and all other IT groups and customers.

Backup/Recovery

  1. Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
  2. Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted customers.

Participate in Projects

  1. With minimal supervision, work with project teams (all levels of QT management and developers), determine needs and make technical recommendations to insure correct server and storage options are designed and installed.

Project Leadership

  1. Fulfill the Project Leader roles through the Project Management Process (PMP).
  2. Lead project teams.
  3. Provide liaison role for project team and management.
  4. Responsible for technical deliverables.
  5. Provide technical expertise and advice as needed.
  6. Identify risk and develop containment strategies.
  7. Manage the design effort and provide design documentation.
  8. Assist Project Owner with implementation, planning and execution.
  9. Communicate project status to customers and project teams.

Reports to: Systems Infrastructure Manager    

Indirectly supervises: Systems Administrators, Store and Client Technology Support Specialist, and Vendors during hardware and software installation, Operators, Application Developers, users during implementation of systems.

 

Relationships

Inside the Company: All Information Technology personnel and high percentage of other department personnel.  

Outside the Company:Hardware/software vendors, personnel in other company data processing installations.         

 

Position Specifications  

 

Required education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Desired education: 4 year College degree in a technology related field.   

Required experience: 4+ years of experience with LANs/WANs and network and systems configuration/administration.  Must possess a thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, VMware, Microsoft IIS, and Microsoft Exchange.  Strong network technology/topology and Microsoft Operating System background.  Thorough understanding of server hardware and concepts including services, security, and multiple domains. Strong knowledge of SAN, NAS, Fibre Channel, iSCSI and networking protocols.  Experience troubleshooting computer hardware/software related problems.

Desired experience: Experience with IBM AS/400 computers, SQL, Cohesity Galaxy Backup software, SharePoint/Project, and AIX. 

Required skills: Thorough knowledge of technical disciplines required to support a mission-critical Windows and VMware enterprise.  Skills include day-to-day network administration and the management of Active Directory network and servers to ensure performance and high-availability requirements of systems and services are met. Diagnostic/troubleshooting and problem solving skills. Planning and goal setting at high and detailed levels; ability to implement technical strategy and design solutions to meet that strategy.  Ability to solve problems independently, quickly and completely and to communicate them clearly to management.     

Desired skills: Ability to translate business needs into technical solutions.  Ability to lead junior personnel during projects and in day-to-day operations.  Needs to be able to work in a team environment.  Must be able to take the initiative and to work without direct supervision.

 

Additional criteria:

 

Position will require shift work while working in the Systems Infrastructure Operations team. This position requires on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  Must have knowledge of many areas and be able to switch between them rapidly.  Must be able to work under pressure and provide guidance to Information Technology users during crisis modes. This position requires the employee to be available by phone and/or email and/or have accessibility to calendar, contacts and data while out of the office.

 

 

Systems Infrastructure Operations – What we do.

We are 99% virtual and are a “VMWare shop”. We are 95% Windows Servers and 5% Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).  We have 1500 virtual servers and 125 physical hosts across two datacenters.  We are in the early stages of a move towards infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and containers, as well as introducing Ubuntu Server into our environment. We are actively moving services and applications into the Azure cloud and will begin supporting Azure operationally within the next 12 months. We support all compute workloads as well as storage in a highly available configuration and ensure protection of all data. We also support/administer various third-party applications and internal development teams for all QuikTrip’s proprietary applications. 

 

We utilize proactive monitoring for all critical systems.  Our team maintains an on-call rotation to provides 24/7 support for all critical infrastructure we are responsible for within the company. This entails one week of a secondary support role and one week of a primary support role once every 6-8 weeks. 

 

Starting Salary: $108,700-$135,900
