Title: Excise Tax Accountant II

Primary Purpose of Job:
Responsible for the analysis, accounting for, and accurate and timely filing of complex excise tax returns to the appropriate taxing jurisdictions. Researches complex tax compliance issues and ensures that the organization remains in compliance with applicable tax regulations. Assists Tax Team members with tax system projects, tax audits, and recommends solutions.

Major Functions:
1. Responsible for the timely and accurate preparation and filing of complex tax returns and credits for multiple states as assigned by management.
- Analyzes data required
- Accounts for taxes owed, charged, or collected
- Prepares tax returns and maintains records
- Reconciles tax accrual accounts
- Completes research and follows up on tax compliance issues.
- Miscellaneous tax projects.

2. Assists Motor Fuel Tax Accountant and Tax Manager with system and rate maintenance.
- 15% of total job
- Frequency of function: Daily
3. Perform projects and various other duties as identified by the Tax Manager.
- Assists with tax research on new products, locations, and lines of business.
- Calculates estimated tax payments and deposits
- Assist in coordination of State and Federal excise tax audits
- Other assignments as determined by the Tax Manager

Reports to: Excise Tax Manager
Relationships:
Inside the Company: Division Managers, Operations Secretaries, Store Gas Accounting, Petroleum Accounting, Store Accounting, Store Development, Marketing and Information Services.
Outside the Company: Federal, State, and Local licensing jurisdictions and taxing authorities.
Position Specifications:
Required Education: Must have successfully completed Intermediate II and all pre-requisite accounting courses.
Desired Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business
Required Experience: Three years of tax experience or four years accounting experience with an emphasis on tax preparation, research and/or general ledger, strong account reconciliation, accrual, technical, and analytical experience.
Desired Experience: Greater than four years tax experience or general accounting, general ledger system, and accounts reconciliation experience, as well as experience with indirect taxes. Accrual accounting experience.
Required Skills: Excel (intermediate), good time management and organizational skills, detail oriented, good oral and written communication skills, independent decision making skills, and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Strong analytical skills and the ability to self-motivate.

Must have excellent attention to detail. Must be flexible to a constantly changing environment. Must be able to work with others as a team. Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a wide variety of complicated tasks. A wide degree problem solving creativity and latitude is expected.
Starting Salary: $64,200-$80,200
