Job Title: Assistant Tax Manager

Primary Purpose of job: This position is responsible for assisting the Income Tax Manager with managing the direct tax compliance functions. Coordinates and represents the company on all non-income related tax audits. Must be familiar with regulations at the federal, state and local level. Ensures organizational compliance with all related federal, state and local tax laws and regulations while minimizing tax liability through sound and informed application of laws and regulations.
Major functions for this position:
Supervise and coordinate all tax audits and controversies (excluding income tax). Keep upper management properly updated on issues. 40% of total job
- Monitor statute of limitations on all open audits and keep up with extension requests.
- Manage the record retention policy and practices for all tax groups (excluding income tax.)
- Ensure audit findings result in sustainable process and procedure changes in the appropriate tax areas of the company. Perform internal reviews of those processes as needed.
- Review and maintain all audit procedures and training documentation.
- Reduce audit findings through internal review and research and engage and work with external parties to review for potential tax overpayment.
Assist the Income Tax Manager with various direct tax responsibilities. 25% of total job
- Annual reports and franchise tax returns
- New entity creation and state registrations
- Tax depreciation calculations
Act as a team member of the Tax Department through cross-training, backup, and support of the Tax Managers 15% of total job
Minimize tax liabilities through sound and informed application of tax laws and regulations.10% of total job
- Monitor changes in tax laws and their impact on the organization.
- Research applicable federal, state, and local tax law changes.
- Respond to inquiries from government agencies regarding tax filings, compliance, claims and related matters as needed.
Support Tax Managers and Assistant Controller - Tax with any special projects as needed. 10% of total job

- Inside the Company: Division Managers, Operations Assistants, Corporate Attorneys, Petroleum Accounting, Store Accounting, Key Mapping, Store Development, Manufacturing and Distribution Accounting, Marketing, and Information Services.
- Outside the Company: Federal and State taxing authorities and auditors, Suppliers, government officials, corporate attorneys.

- Required education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or business-related field plus successfully completed Intermediate Accounting II.
- Desired education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- Required experience: Five years income, sales, or excise tax compliance experience or six years accounting experience including general ledger, accrual, and account reconciliation. Research experience in tax or technical accounting.
- Desired experience: Seven years income, sales, or excise tax compliance, review, research, and systems experience.
- Required skills: Proficient with Microsoft Suite, good time management and organizational skills, detail oriented, good oral and written communication skills, independent decision-making skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Strong analytical skills and self-motivated.
Starting Salary Range: $101,700-$127,100
