Primary Purpose of Job:

Responsible for assisting the Excise Tax Manager with managing the compliance functions. Assists with oversight of the completion of timely and accurate tax returns in order to minimize tax obligation of the organization. Must be familiar with regulations at the federal, state and local level. Helps to ensure organizational compliance with all related federal, state and local tax laws and regulations while minimizing tax liability through sound and informed application of laws and regulations.

 

Major functions for this position: 

 

Manages the preparation, timely filing, payment, and review of all cigarette and tobacco excise and transaction-based tax returns and related reporting to ensure organization compliance with all related federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations. 

  • 35% of total job

Assist with the preparation, timely filing, payment, and review of all motor fuel excise tax returns and related reporting to ensure organization compliance with all related federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.

  • 20% of total job

Act as a team member of the Tax Department through cross-training, backup, and support of the Tax Managers.

  • 15% of total job

Minimize excise tax liabilities through sound and informed application of tax laws and regulations.

  • Monitor changes in tax laws and their impact on the organization
  • Research applicable federal, state, and local tax law changes.
  • Oversee taxability set ups of cigarette and tobacco retail items.
  • Coordinate with Tax team for responses to inquiries from government agencies regarding tax filings, compliance, claims and related matters as needed.

Assist with monitoring and maintaining all excise tax systems related to reporting.

  • Support Excise Tax Manager to ensure that accruals/rate changes are timely and accurate for excise taxes.
  • Support Excise Tax Manager to maintain and update all reporting systems relating to excise taxes.
  • Coordinate excise tax accounting matters with appropriate departments as requested by Tax Managers.
    • 10% of total job

Support Tax Managers and Assistant Controller – Tax with any special projects as needed.

Inside the Company:Division Managers, Operations Assistants, Petroleum Accounting, Store

Accounting, Key Mapping, Store Development, Manufacturing and Distribution Accounting,

Outside the Company: Federal and State taxing authorities and auditors, Suppliers, government officials, corporate attorneys. 

 

Position Specifications

Required education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or business-related field plus successfully completed Intermediate Accounting II.

 

Desired education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

 

Required experience: Five years income, sales, or excise tax compliance experience or six years accounting experience including general ledger, accrual, and account reconciliation. Research experience in tax or technical accounting.

 

Desired experience: Seven years income, sales, or excise tax compliance, review, research, and systems experience.

 

Required Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Excel, good time management and organizational skills, detail oriented, good oral and written communication skills, independent decision-making skills, and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Strong analytical skills and the ability to self-motivate.

 

Additional criteria

This position requires good time management and organizational skills. Must be able to work under pressure of deadlines. This is an extremely technical position requiring specific skills and training. Needs good phone skills for dealing with personnel in various taxing jurisdictions. This position must be able to quickly respond to research needs in regards to all aspects to Store Development Accounting when needed. Must have the ability to multi-task. This position must have good inter-personal relationships with operations, executive departments, as well as finance/accounting personnel.

 

Starting Salary Range: $101,700 – 127,100
